Lip Filler Training: Techniques, Anatomy & Complication Management

Lip Filler Training: Techniques, Anatomy & Complication Management | Dr. Dray Academy

Lip filler training at Dr. Dray Academy is built for injectors who want repeatable technique, anatomy-led planning, and calm complication management. You’ll master border refinement, tubercle projection and perioral support while developing the judgement to say “less is more” for long-term aesthetics and patient trust.

Lip filler training with model – assessment and mapping
Assessment first: symmetry, ratios, E-line guidance, and the role of neighbouring structures.

Assessment & Planning: From Ideals to Individual

  • Ageing changes: thinning lips, philtral lengthening, deeper peri-oral lines, and corner down-turning.
  • Profile harmony: use E-line guidance and consider chin/nose before over-projecting lips.
  • History & prior work: look for migration in the white lip; dissolve and reset when needed.
  • Ratios: aim for a natural 1:1.6 (lower to upper) while respecting ethnic and cultural preferences.

Technique Library You’ll Practise

Lip injection techniques – border and body planes
Border threads for definition; deeper, smoother placement for volume in the body.
Lip filler training before and after
Soft projection and better lip show without heaviness or migration.

Border & Definition

  • Superficial linear threads just inside the vermilion for crisp edges and lipstick hold.
  • Micro-aliquots to GK points and Cupid’s bow for shape—avoid over-rounding the peaks.

Body & Projection

  • Linear threads or small boluses to central upper tubercle and paired lower tubercles.
  • Use gel selection to match goals: firmer for definition, softer for subtle body hydration.

Perioral Support

  • Oral commissure support to counter down-turning.
  • Consider perioral lines with micro-threads; avoid creating top-lip heaviness.

Safety Culture & Complication Readiness

Superior labial artery awareness for safe lip injections
Understand surface landmarks and typical vessel courses to reduce risk.
  • Vascular awareness: thoughtful planes, gentle pressure, and massage for contour smoothing.
  • Common issues: bruising/haematoma, swelling, nodules—when to massage, watch-and-wait, or escalate.
  • Infection red flags: heat, redness, disproportionate pain—know your pathways and local protocols.
Technique tip – external rotation: using more superficial planes (where appropriate) can encourage upward lip show. For smiles that pull inward, adding structural resistance (e.g., nearby fold support) may help.

Curriculum Pathway & Mentoring

  • Online modules: anatomy refreshers, product science, and planning frameworks.
  • Practical days (London): mentored injections on live models with 1:1 feedback.
  • Case reviews: photographic analysis, migration troubleshooting, and maintenance planning.
Precision needle placement to the lips during training
Precision and restraint: it’s not just where you inject, it’s how little you need.
